The Straatmeyer History Display at the University of Dubuque won an ADDY Award on February 22nd.  The award was presented by the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF).  According to the organization, selection is based on a scoring process in which a panel of judges evaluates each entry.  The judging panel this year included Jenna Tietje, Senior Manager, Category Marketing – Beauty, Target Corporation, Minneapolis, MN; Ian Simpson, Senior Copywriter, Clarity Coverdale Fury, Minneapolis, MN; and Lance Dietrich, Owner, Lance Dietrich Design, Palmyra, PA.

The Straatmeyer History Display is a collection of artifacts, images and personal narratives spanning the University’s history. In the nomination letter for the ADDY Award, UD President Jeff Bullock wrote, “What I personally love about the display, however, is the way that it brings history to life.”  He attributes this to the integration of visual imagery, audio/visual technology, artifacts and personal narratives.

The display won the “Out-Of-Home” Best of Category/Gold Award.  Jeff Westrom, Designer and Installer, and Cathy Goodman, Copy and Research, with J.W.Morton & Associates of Cedar Rapids, IA were the lead designers on the project.  The Charles C. Myers Library staff played a critical role in the development of the display, including Assistant Director for Library Systems and Technical Services, Jonathan Helmke.  The display is named in honor of Al Straatmeyer (C’54, BDIV’57) who has played a significant role in documenting the history of UD and funding the history display.
